Information on Exhibition Space

at Norfolk Botanical Garden

Exhibition Space and Audience

The exhibition space at NBG is located in Baker Hall Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is the starting point for guests touring the Garden during the day and is also the site of after-hours functions such as weddings and corporate parties.

Acceptable Themes and Media

Art on display should reflect a garden, nature, or local interest theme (local landmarks, for example.)

The final decision of which pieces to include in the display will be made by the fine arts committee. Displayed artwork must reflect quality of work submitted in the application.

Applications

We receive more requests for display space than we can accommodate in a calendar year.  Submitting an application does not guarantee exhibit space for your group.  The NBG Fine Arts Committee reviews all applications and will notify you as to the status of your exhibit.  To receive an application, mail inquiries to: Norfolk Botanical Garden Fine Arts Committee, 6700 Azalea Garden Road, Norfolk, VA 23518 or e-mail to perry.mathewes@nbgs.org

Lighting

We have limited ability to adjust and control lighting in the exhibit space.  Ambient light enters the space from windows and from two glass doorways.  Floodlights are directed on portions of the wall space.

Installation Procedure

We have a clip and hook system for hanging art. All pieces should arrive wired for hanging- no brackets or rings. The wire, when taut, should hang no less than 3” from the top of the frame. The NBG Fine Arts Committee will install the exhibition.  The number of pieces that can be accepted depends on the size of the works and our hanging system.  Each of the two exhibit walls in Baker Hall has 32 linear feet of exhibit space (which may accommodate up to 50 pieces, depending on their size.)

Title Panel and Labels

Title panels mounted on foam board or mat board may be displayed. Visitors like to read biographies. You will need to provide labels for the individual pieces in the exhibit.  If pieces are for sale, prices on labels are helpful, as well as artist, title, and medium. These labels should be typed, using a standard format and 24 point font. If the labels are to be placed in a lower corner of the piece, they should not overlap onto the piece itself. Information should be emailed or sent on disc one week prior to hanging if we are helping produce labels.

Sales

Sales of artwork will be handled by the artist. A small sign in the gallery indicates to prospective buyers to contact the artist, referring to contact information on each piece or on the artist’s displayed bio. You will not need a business license. You will need to provide Norfolk Botanical Garden with an exhibition list for each artist that includes titles, mediums, prices and phone number and address.  Norfolk Botanical Garden will receive 20% of exhibit sales, if they should handle sales.

Reception

Groups or individuals exhibiting art may reserve the hall on either the first Saturday or the first Tuesday of the month between 3p.m. and 5p.m., at a rate of $200.
