The Active Gardener

Get going in the garden with these classes. 

 

FULL MOON WALK

Tuesday • October 14 • 5:30-7PM

Learn about the plants, animals and insects that come alive in the evening as others settle into slumber.  Wear your walking shoes & let Education Program Manager Perry Mathewes guide you through the Garden for an enchanted autumn evening. 

Cost: $16 ($10 for NBG Members)

KAYAKING ON LAKE WHITEHURST

In partnership with Kayak Nature ToursKayaking on Lake Whitehurst

SUNSET PADDLE

Thursdays

September 18 • 5:30PM-sunset

October 2 • 5:30PM-sunset

Enjoy a calm evening paddle with experienced guides and explore the world of wild creatures that inhabit the shores and waters of Lake Whitehurst. Kayaks and other necessary equipment supplied.

*Great for beginners: pre-trip instruction, no experience necessary.

Cost: $45 per trip ($40 per trip for NBG Members)

YOGA IN THE GARDEN

Garden HATHA YOGA

Wednesdays • 9:30-10:30AM • 5-week sessions

Session B: September 24- October 22

Enjoy the panoramic vista of our beautiful Rose Garden Hall while learning basic yoga poses (asanas) and breathing (prana) techniques with Yoga Alliance Instructor for Hatha Yoga Mollie Robertson, RYT.  In this class you will learn positions for strength and flexibility in the body and deep relaxation and breath work for a calm and centered mind.

Cost: $65 ($50 for NBG Members)

GENTLE YOGA

Mondays • 11:30AM-12:30PM (5-week sessions)

Session B: January 12- February 9

This class focuses on the practice of physical strengthening and balance in easily accessible Rose Garden Hall with panoramic views of our Bicentennial Rose Garden. This class is ideal for beginners and seniors; taught by Yoga Alliance Instructor for Hatha Yoga Mollie Robertson, RYT.

Cost: $65/session ($55 /session for NBG Members)

BASIC YOGA

BEGINNING TAI CHI

Thursdays • 7-8:30PM

January 15 – April 2 (12 weeks)

Tai Chi is best described as a “moving meditation exercise.” This slow-moving, gentle exercise program taught by Patrick Delauder, certified instructor, is appropriate for every body type, age or physical condition. Classes will be inside with Garden views or out in the Garden when weather permits.

Students should come with comfortable clothes, shoes and an open heart and mind.

Cost: $165 ($135 for NBG Members)

Price includes membership registration to the Taoist Tai Chi Society.

CONTINUING TAI CHI

Thursdays • 6-7PM (12 weeks)

Session A: October 2 – January 8  (No class Nov 27, Dec 25 & Jan 1)

Session B: January 15 – April 2

(For those who have taken a Beginning Taoist Tai Chi Class and are current members of the Taoist Tai Chi Society.)

Cost: $145 ($115 for NBG Members)

DANCING IN THE GARDEN

In partnership with Swing Virginia

No Rhythm, No Partner, No Problem! 

These are "Walk In, Dance Out" beginner friendly classes.  Ages 12 & Up

Taught by Erika Phillips, NDCA Certified Ballroom Dance Instructor 

SWING DANCE II - Lindy Hop (4 weeks)

Wednesdays • October 1-22 • 7-8:30PM

Learn how to keep your feet swingin’ to the sounds of the Big Band era by learning how to Dance the Lindy Hop.  Whether you have taken Swing before or never danced at all, this class is guaranteed to make you the hippest cat around!

Beginner friendly no experience necessary.  In conjunction with Swing Virginia.

Cost: $50 ($40 for NBG Members)

COUNTRY WESTERN 2-STEP (4 weeks)

Wednesdays • October 29- November 19 • 7-8:30PM

Before you get into the "Ho, Ho, Ho!" Spirit, get into the "Hoe-down Spirit" and put your cowboy boots on for some 2-Stepping fun. No need to bring a Guy or Gal – everyone will have fun in this beginner class. “Walk in, Dance out!”

RUMBA – A Ballroom Specialty (6 weeks)

Tuesdays • January 20- February 24 • 7-8:30PM

Learn to dance the Rumba! Let the "Latin Love Dance" keep you warm during the winter and get you in the mood for Valentine’s Day. Never danced before? No Partner, No Rhythm, No Problem!

Cost: $75 ($60 for NBG Members)

PILATES IN THE GARDEN

Mondays • 6-7PM  (8 weeks)

Session A: October 6- November 24

Session B: January 5-Febuary 23

Pilates incorporates a system of movements that re-educate, re-pattern, re-align and balance your body. Certified Personal Trainer Karen Dougherty will focus on core muscles - abdominal, back, hamstrings and inner thighs.

Cost: $95/session ($75/session for NBG Members)

OWL PROWL

Saturday ­ November 1 ­ 7:00-9:00 PM  SOLD OUT
Join Wildlife Biologist Don Schwab as the hush falls over the forest and darkness creeps through the trees in search of magnificent night hunters. Norfolk Botanical Garden is home to three species: barred owls, great horned owls and eastern screech owls. Dress for walking in the woods – including insect repellant, a flashlight & walking shoes.

This popular program fills quickly; register early.

Join Dr. Bonnie Appleton, Professor of Horticulture at Virginia Tech, for a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean visiting the Mamika Gardens on St. Lucia and the Andromeda Botanic Gardens on Barbados. Arriving at peak blooming season, you will have the opportunity to see thousands of orchids, hundreds of hibiscus and many varieties of ferns, begonias, palms and other species that grow in splendid profusion. Dr. Appleton will hold onboard lectures and special learning opportunities. Spaces are limited!
