WORLD OF WONDERS

 

TUNES FOR TOTS

Tuesdays • October & November • 10:15-11AM

Shake, rattle and roll with the return of Tunes for Tots - Tuesday mornings this fall! Join us in WOW for programming to be shared by toddlers and their grown-ups.  Be ready to bang drums and shake maracas while our Garden Teacher leads songs that will have everyone up and moving!

GARDEN STORYTIME

Wednesdays • October & November • 10:15-11AM

Wednesday mornings join us in WOW as a Garden Teacher reads a story and then leads a Garden exploration. From jungle adventures to those three little pigs, each week will feature a different tale with plenty of pictures and props to delight the senses.

PUMPKIN PARTY

Saturday • October 18 • 10AM-12PM

Celebrate fall with a pumpkin party!  Bring your own pumpkin; we’ll provide the carving tools and clean up the mess!  Drink cider and play fall games with other guests.  This activity is appropriate for children 5 & up with a parent.

Cost:  $7/person ($4/person for NBG Members)

 

TEDDY BEAR TEA  SOLD OUT

Saturday • November 1 • 10AM-12PM

Sip tea and eat cookies with your favorite stuffed friend. Bring a teddy bear and decorate your own cookies and teacups, play tea games and learn about the camellia plant. Adults must accompany children to this event

Cost:  $7/person ($4/person for NBG Members)

  

ABRAKADOODLE®

Fridays •October 3- November 7

Twoosy Doodlers (20-36 mo) • 9:15-10AM

Mini Doodlers (3-5 yrs.) • 10:15-11AM

Norfolk Botanical Garden has again teamed up with Abrakadoodle®, the nation’s leader in creative art education, to bring art programming to the beautiful setting of the Garden. Adults are asked to remain in class and watch their little ones create masterpieces! Each week of the session will provide another educational and fun art activity.  (Miss a week?  Don’t worry; your Abrakadoodle® teacher will make a packet so the activity can be enjoyed at home.)

Class min: 4/ max: 8

Cost:  $90 for six-week session ($72 for NBG Members for six-week session)

 

 

Family Overnights

Bring the entire family for our popular Family Campouts!  We’ll provide all of the food, just bring your tents and be ready for adventure!  From campfire songs to exploring the Enchanted Forest at night everyone will enjoy this unique way to experience the Garden.  Sign up early; you won’t want to miss these family favorites!

THINGS THAT GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

Join us in the Enchanted Forest for a night of surprises.  Come dressed-up in your favorite costume and enjoy a Trick or Tree tour around the Garden.  Then circle around the campfire for a night of Halloween songs and stories. 

PIRATE EXPLORATION

Saturday-Sunday • November 8-9

Come on aboard mateys and join the Botanical Buccaneers. Bring your best pirate outfit and come prepared to explore! Discover the wonders of the sky and learn how pirates throughout history used stars to find their way! Don’t let the cold scare you away, face it with a pirate parade and a treasure hunt! 

Cost:  $25 / person ($20 / person for NBG Members)

$10 / child 4 & under

(Campouts are held rain or shine.  If cancelled at the Garden’s discretion, a full refund will be given.)

Pre-registration is required. Full payment is due upon registration. 

 

SCIENCE SLEEPOVER FOR GIRLS

Saturday • January 24 • 4:30PM              Sunday • January 25 • 8:00AM

Love Science? Come meet some of the great women scientists that live and work in Hampton Roads and earn your career badge!  This sleepover is open for any girl in 4-6th grade and her female chaperone. Experience a night of hands-on-fun and learning while making new friends!  (Participants will be sleeping in Rose Garden Hall)

Cost: Girls $30 ($25 for NBG Members); Chaperones $20 ($15 for NBG Members)

Holiday Programs

POLAR EXPRESS          SOLD OUT                

Sundays-Thursdays • 4:30-6PM

December 1 - December 22 (December 7 is reserved for Girl Scouts)

Bring your family to ride the Polar Express! Sip cocoa and nibble on cookies while listening to a reading of the story The Polar Express. Children will make a holiday ornament to take home. Finish the evening with a tram ride through the Garden of Lights. This event has become a tradition for many families, so book early!

Cost: $10 ($8 for NBG Members)

Special Girl Scout Polar Express Night  (SOLD OUT)

Sunday • December 7 • 4:30PM- 6PM

Come to the special Girl Scout Night of the Polar Express!  Decorate your own cookie and sip hot cocoa while listening to a reading of the story.  Then board a tram for a ride through the Garden of Lights.  This is a special program for girl scouts and their leaders or parents only.  Siblings are not allowed.  

Cost: $8/person (Adults must accompany Scout troops.)

 

                                         

COOKIES AND COCOA FOR SANTA        

Saturday • December 6

10 AM-12 NOON

1-3 PM

Surprise Santa this year with a personalized plate and cocoa mug! Design and paint your own glass mug and plate as a treasured holiday keepsake.

Family Activity for children 5 & up, accompanied by an adult.   

Cost:  $16 per plate and mug ($10 per plate and mug for NBG Members)          

 

MAKE A HOLIDAY ORNAMENT

Saturday • December 13 • 10AM-12PM

Use creative materials to make holiday ornaments to be enjoyed for years to come.

Family Activity for children 5 & up, accompanied by an adult.

BUILD A HOLIDAY COOKIE HOUSE

Build a treat to be enjoyed throughout the entire holiday season! Choose from all of your favorite cookie house decorations, from candy canes to gumdrops. We provide all of the goodies and clean up the mess!

Home School Families

HOME SCHOOL TAKEOVER DAYS

SCIENCE IN A ROOM WITHOUT WALLS

Attention all homeschoolers!  Norfolk Botanical Garden would like to invite you to come explore our 155 acre outdoor classroom.  These exciting educational fieldtrips offer homeschoolers a chance to get together with other kids and take part in hands-on programming led by our experienced Garden Teachers.  Science journals will be provided for all participating children and are included in the cost of the program.

(Please note:  Pre-registration is required for all members of your group visiting the garden, including those not participating in the program. Check-in begins at 9AM; program begins at 9:30 AM )

DAY OF DISCOVERY

Friday • October 17 • 9AM-12:30PM

Come learn about the creative critters that live in the garden!  Let us introduce you to some of the most useful native plants in Virginia, Why are trees so important? Learn about the many amazing uses for a tree and explore ancient Mali in the World of Wonders. 

Cost: $10 per participant ($8 for NBG Members) *includes 1 free adult

SKILLS OF THE WILD

Friday • November 14 • 9AM-12:30PM

Native American Theme. 

The Native Americans were the first environmental stewards.  Come visit the homes of the Sioux, the Powhatan and the Pueblo.  Learn about their way of life, and how they used their natural environment for survival. 

Cost: $10 per participant ($8 for NBG Members) *includes 1 free adult

Family Specialties

FAMILY POWER - GREEN HOUR

Saturday • October 4 • 10AM-12PM

Dress for mess and bring your family to the Garden for an hour of environmental investigation with Emily Jackson, School Programs Coordinator.  We will explore some of the great activities that you can do as a family outdoors.  Search for insects, observe wildlife, investigate plants and see how the Norfolk Botanical Garden provides a wonderful, healthy ecosystem for all of its inhabitants.  Parents will receive Green Hour ideas to take home and continue the outdoor experience.   

 (Please note: this program is best suited for children 3 and older.)

Cost:  $7 / person ($4 / person for NBG Members)

                   

PAWS TO READ

Sundays • 2–3PM

October 19 • November 16 • December 21 • January 18

Children can improve their reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a therapy dog. Bring your favorite book or read one of ours. Dogs provide rapt attention and children can read aloud without fear of criticism or interruption. Children 5 – 10 years old may sign up for reading sessions with therapy dogs in Storybook Forest. Therapy Dogs International or the Delta Society Pet Partners Program certifies all therapy dogs and their handlers. During the reading session, the dog’s handler is always present along with a library staff member. Parents may accompany if they wish. 

Free with Garden admission. (Signed permission slip is required.)
