Volunteer Needs

Volunteering at NorfolkBotanical Garden is not only gardening!  Volunteers work in every department, inside and outdoors.  Yes, there is lots of mulching and weeding to done year-round, but volunteers also do paperwork, work in maintenance, and even do virtual volunteering from home!  Volunteer opportunities below are listed by type, with special events first and ongoing volunteer needs second. If you have questions, or need more information, please call Debra Burrell at (757) 441-5830 extension 327, or e-mail volunteer@nbgs.org . We look forward to working with you!

Everything you do makes a difference.

WOW!  YOU WANT TO WORK WITH KIDS?

POLAR EXPRESS
Sunday – Thursdays
December 1 – December 23
4-6:30 p.m.
Our own Polar Express, right here in the Garden. Volunteers help families get cookies and hot chocolate, assist the families while they create a keepsake ornament, and ride the tram to the North Pole to give out the “magic” bells.  Some volunteers stay in the warm room and get it ready for the next day. You’ll help create a memory that will last forever.

WOW DOCENT

ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

Especially SATURDAYS OR SUNDAYS

9 a.m. - 1 p.m.,

or 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers are an important part of WOW.  They greet visitors, help stamp passports, show how cooperation means more water shooting in the air, and man discovery carts to enhance the visitors’ experience.  This is a great opportunity for families to volunteer together (youngest family member must be at least 10 years old).   Junior volunteers (14 – 17) are welcome, too.

GETTING DIRTY IN THE GARDEN

 Volunteer in the Rose Garden

PULL & PLANT
Saturday, October 11th, 2008
9:00 a.m. - Noon
It’s time to pull up the summer annuals and put in winter plants. Meet in the Visitors Center for fortifying coffee and sweets, and then go out into the Garden armed with plants, trowels, and a little bit of muscle.  Dress for mess, bring a water bottle, gloves (if you have them) and sunscreen, and come prepared to dig in the dirt!

GARDENING ASSISTANT

Weekdays, 9 a.m. - Noon or 1 - 3:30 p.m.

Come and garden in 155 acres of beauty. You don't need to have experience, you'll learn as you grow.

IF YOU LOVE MEETING THE PUBLIC

GARDEN OF LIGHTS
Friday & Saturday, November 21& 22 then
Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving Day) – Wednesday, December 31 (New Years Eve)
5-7:30 p.m. or 7-10 p.m.
You’ll meet happy people who are delighted to see the lights. There are two possible assignments where volunteers are working this year: directing traffic and the donation tables. You will be outside most of the time, and standing a lot, so dressing for the weather and wearing comfortable shoes are crucial. This is a fun opportunity for groups and families to volunteer together. The time will fly by, and for every shift you volunteer, you’ll get a ticket to come back to Garden of Lights and drive through yourself.
